JUSTICE CIRCLE / CORE MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The Justice Circle is an intergenerational space with a focus on building deep relationships between women and nonbinary people of color. We center racial, economic, and gender justice work. It is our monthly membership meeting, in which members attend to network, build skills, develop solidarity, and actively participate. All SISTA Fire members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please, click here to sign-up for our email list to be part of the Justice Circle’s monthly meetings.

TYPES OF MEMBERSHIP

SISTA Fire has three levels of membership, illustrated below. We choose to illustrate our membership structure as a circular structure to reflect the flexibility our members need. We recognize that depending on life circumstances, the availability and capacity of our members fluctuate–as such, members can move between the different levels in order to maintain their membership with SISTA Fire. The different levels are Emergent, Collective, and SISTA Member.

Emergent Members have expressed that they are interested and have come to one or more events as part of our general membership. General membership meetings happen monthly at our Justice Circle.

Collective Members are active in at least one program and/or organizing projects, attend monthly Justice Circle meetings, attend trainings and SISTA Fire events, and volunteer at least 5 hours a month of their time.

SISTA Members are active in the collective membership, attend monthly Justice Circle meetings, engage and volunteer at least 10 hours of their time a month. They are involved in decision-making processes with staff, take on leadership roles, attend retreats, and/or participate in coordinating committees (see below). They are passionate and committed to justice.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

All members must pay a yearly membership fee with a sliding scale of $5.00 – $15.00.

MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES

SISTA Fire members are encouraged to join one or more committees. The committees you are welcome to participate in as a member of SISTA Fire are as follows:

The Black Maternal Health Campaign Committee is working to address the systemic racism and maternal health crisis that Black birthing families are facing within Rhode Island. Committee members work to advance our agenda in demanding Women and Infants Hospital change their policies and practices in order to improve the birth outcomes of Black families in Rhode Island. Members have also worked to gain passage of the RI Doula Bill, expanding supports to families through active engagement in the Community Doula Taskforce.

The Doulas of Color Network was established through the reproductive justice work SISTA Fire has been doing in Rhode Island. Because of this work, SISTA Fire’s member network includes a number of doulas of color. Needing an affinity space, these doulas established a network that gathers once monthly. This committee is only open to those who are doulas, or in the process of becoming a doula.

The Mutual Aid Committee  is made up of SISTA Fire members who volunteer to provide people within our communities with mutual aid support.
